A young man named Tristan (Charlie Cox) tries to win the heart of Victoria (Sienna Miller), the beautiful but cold object of his desire, by going on a quest to retrieve a fallen star. His journey takes him to a mysterious and forbidden land beyond the walls of his village. On his odyssey, Tristan finds the star, which has transformed into a striking girl named Yvaine (Claire Danes). However, Tristan is not the only one seeking the star. A king's (Peter O'Toole) four living sons - not to mention the ghosts of their three dead brothers - all need the star as they vie for the throne. Tristan must also overcome the evil witch, Lamia (Michelle Pfeiffer), who needs the star to make her young again. As Tristan battles to survive these threats, encountering a pirate named Captain Shakespeare (Robert De Niro) and a shady trader named Ferdy the Fence (Ricky Gervais) along the way, his quest changes. He must now win the heart of the star for himself as he discovers the meaning of true love.

| i have only seen the stardust trailers and i can bet you it will grab lots of attention the cinemars because all the harry potter fans are looking forward to more magical adventures. |

| it was a gorgeous, witty, suspenseful ride. we knew it would have a happy ending (all faerie tales have to) but so what? the casting was impeccable (claire danes was unjustly maligned) .... michelle pfeiffer was funny and macabre (and scary, too) as lamia (look up the name in greek mythology)....her sisters were delightful caricatures out of the brothers grimm....charlie cox was perfectly sweet and naive....de niro proved that a fearsome pirate could be swishy (and keep his reputation; remember "rum, sodomy and the lash?")....the evil princes were, well, evil, and got their comeuppance (wittily done)...the score was apt and luscious)....the reign of magick was beautifully, shrewdly portrayed...and, yes, there was a bit of the bittersweet, the tender, underlying the metaphor of sentient stars (an idea i recently saw on doctor who---"42"---in a creepy, but all's-well-that-ends-well series 3 episode)....
and neil gaiman himself (writer of the 4-part "stardust" serial and co-producer) was quite pleased with the result, so what's no to love? |
